Buying Contact Lenses in Florida

Read this first. Contact Lens HQ and Style Site Optical share common ownership. This is the one page on this site where we have something to sell you, and we are telling you that up front rather than at the bottom in grey text. Every other page on this site is independent and stays that way — Contact Lens HQ does not sell contact lenses. The practice does, and only to people in Florida, because that is where Dr. Bollar is licensed.

If you live in Florida and you buy your lenses online, there is a good chance you are paying more than you would pay us — because of a rebate rule almost nobody reads. And you can order from your phone and have them delivered, exactly like the websites.

The rule

Three of the four contact lens manufacturers require you to buy the lenses from the eye doctor who prescribed them in order to qualify for their rebate. CooperVision’s 2026 document does not leave it ambiguous — it excludes 1-800 Contacts, Costco and internet retailers by name. Bausch + Lomb requires receipts from the prescribing practitioner. Alcon says to buy from the doctor who prescribed them.

Those rebates run to $250.

So the comparison most people make — our price against the cheapest website — is the wrong comparison. The right one is our price minus the rebate, against the website price, where no rebate exists.

And here is the part that should annoy you: in sworn testimony to the Senate Judiciary Committee, Johnson & Johnson’s own witness said 6 to 8 percent of Acuvue wearers actually redeem their rebate. Most of that money is never claimed by anyone.

We wrote the whole thing up, including how to claim and why claims get rejected, on our rebates page. It applies whether you buy from us or not.

You do not have to drive here to reorder

This is the part people assume works against us, and it does not.

Buying from your prescriber sounds like it means a trip to Aventura every few months. It does not. We use MARLO, Alcon’s direct-to-patient ordering platform. You scan our code once when you are here, we load your prescription, and after that you reorder from your phone and it ships to your door — same as ordering from a website.

Three things follow from that, and together they are the whole argument on this page:

That last point matters more than it sounds. Substituting a different brand than the one prescribed is the exact conduct the FTC fined one online retailer $3.5 million for, and we wrote about it. Base curve and diameter are fitted to your eye. A lens with the right power and the wrong curve can sit too tight and starve the cornea of oxygen.

What we will actually do

When you should not buy from us

We would rather say this than have you find out later.

If you are not in Florida, we cannot help you. Dr. Bollar is licensed in Florida and contact lenses are a prescription medical device. Use our price index and retailer rankings instead — they are written without any reference to us.

If you buy three months at a time, the rebate argument mostly disappears. Most rebates require an annual supply, which is exactly why J&J found only around 20 percent of wearers even qualify. Buy in quarters and you should shop on price alone.

If you are a Costco member, check them. The one Costco price we were able to verify was the cheapest we found anywhere, and we say so on the Costco review even though it costs us.

We fit the things this site writes about: torics, multifocals, sclerals, and myopia control lenses for children.

Why we bothered to separate the two

Nearly every large contact lens website is owned by a company that sells contact lenses, and it never says so plainly. We thought the more useful thing was to keep the review site genuinely independent and put the commercial offer on one clearly marked page.

That is why our retailer ranking puts Costco first even though Costco pays us nothing and competes with us. If the reviews only ever pointed at us, they would be worth nothing to you, and you would work that out quickly.
