ContactsDirect Review: Six-Month Returns and the Luxottica Question

The short version. ContactsDirect is the quietly competent option. Not the cheapest, but it has the longest return window of anyone we checked, the widest in-network insurance list, and a solid customer rating. The thing most reviews do not mention is who owns it.

Who you are actually buying from

ContactsDirect is operated by Luxottica of America Inc., part of EssilorLuxottica. This is confirmed in ContactsDirect’s own terms and conditions, which list the Mason, Ohio address.

That name may not mean much until you realise EssilorLuxottica also owns Ray-Ban, Oakley, Sunglass Hut, LensCrafters, Pearle Vision, Target Optical and the EyeMed vision insurance plan, among others. It is the largest eyewear company in the world by a considerable distance.

Is that a problem? Not in the way people sometimes assume. ContactsDirect sells the same manufacturer-sealed boxes as everyone else — Alcon, J&J, CooperVision and Bausch + Lomb make the lenses, not Luxottica. There is no substitution risk here of the kind the FTC found at Hubble.

What it does explain is the insurance list. ContactsDirect is in-network with EyeMed — which its parent company owns — along with Superior Vision, Aetna Vision Preferred, Anthem Blue View Vision and Humana Vision. VSP is out of network, though ContactsDirect will help you submit the claim. If you are an EyeMed member, this is very likely the smoothest purchase you can make.

The six-month return window

This is the standout feature and it is not close.

Unopened, undamaged, unmarked boxes can be returned within six months of receipt for a full refund, excluding shipping, with refunds processed within fifteen business days of the boxes arriving back.

Compare that to Warby Parker at 30 days, Hubble at 14, and LensDirect at 30. Only Walmart Contacts, at 90 days, comes close.

Six months matters more than it sounds for a specific and common reason: if you buy an annual supply and your prescription changes at your next exam, or a lens stops suiting you, you are not stuck with eight unopened boxes of the wrong thing. That is the single most common way people waste money on contact lenses, and this policy is the best protection against it we found.

Price, honestly

ContactsDirect is mid-pack. From our price index, checked 23 August 2026:

  • Biofinity 6-pack: $44.49 — the cheapest of any retailer we could price
  • Acuvue Oasys 1-Day 90-pack: $104.11 — mid-range
  • Acuvue Oasys 2-Week 24-pack: $186.49 — expensive

One thing to be aware of: the price you see is already discounted from a higher list price, shown struck through. That is a normal retail presentation rather than anything deceptive, but it means the “saving” displayed is against a list price nobody pays, so judge the final number on its own.

Unlike some competitors, what you see is broadly what you pay. There is no large fee appearing at checkout and no rebate you have to chase through the post.

Shipping and verification

Standard shipping is free with no minimum, at seven to ten business days — slower than several competitors. Priority is $14.99 for three to five days and Express $19.99 for one to two. Some items only qualify for standard shipping if they are not held in the warehouse.

For verification, upload a prescription image at checkout or let them call your prescriber, after which the standard eight-business-hour rule applies. Uploading is faster.

Reputation

Trustpilot rates ContactsDirect 4.2 out of 5, described as “Great,” across roughly 165 to 175 reviews, checked 23 August 2026.

We could not locate a Better Business Bureau profile for ContactsDirect under Luxottica of America, and rather than substitute the parent company’s file we are going to leave that blank. A review volume in the low hundreds is also modest — treat 4.2 as encouraging rather than conclusive.

We found no FTC or state enforcement action against ContactsDirect.

Our view

Use ContactsDirect if you have EyeMed, Superior Vision, Aetna Vision Preferred, Anthem Blue View Vision or Humana Vision — the in-network benefit will usually beat a cheaper listed price elsewhere. Also use them if you are buying an annual supply and want the six-month safety net, which is worth real money if your prescription is not perfectly settled.

Look elsewhere if you need lenses quickly, since seven to ten days on free shipping is at the slow end, or if you are buying Acuvue Oasys 2-Week, where they were among the most expensive we found.

Worth knowing either way: the ownership. Not because it makes them worse, but because “independent online retailer” is how these sites present themselves, and this one is a division of the largest eyewear company on earth, which also owns your insurance plan if you are on EyeMed. You should know who is on both sides of that transaction.

Contact Lens HQ does not sell contact lenses. Some links on this site earn us a commission, and none of them influenced anything above. Reviewed by Dr. Teresita Bollar, OD.
