Biofinity Toric: CooperVision’s Astigmatism Workhorse

Biofinity Toric is probably the most prescribed toric lens in the world, and not because of a headline technology. It wins on two unglamorous things: a material that stays wettable without a surface coating, and a parameter range that actually includes your prescription.

The material

Comfilcon A: silicone hydrogel at 48% water with a Dk/t around 160.

What sets it apart is Aquaform. Rather than applying a wetting coating or a plasma surface treatment, the material incorporates hydrogen bonding that attracts and holds water within the matrix itself. The lens is naturally wettable.

The practical consequence: there is no coating to degrade over the month, or to be stripped by a solution that disagrees with it. This is a large part of why Biofinity has a reputation for behaving the same on day 28 as on day 1.

Keeping the axis still

A toric lens has to hold one orientation on an eye that blinks roughly fifteen times a minute. Biofinity Toric uses CooperVision’s Optimized Toric Lens Geometry, a prism-ballast design intended to stay stable regardless of head position.

That last part matters and is usually left out. A toric lens can stabilise perfectly while you sit upright in the exam chair, then rotate when you lie down, tilt your head, or look up at a shelf. The result is vision that drifts in and out.

If your vision “comes and goes,” say exactly that. It is a stabilisation problem, not a prescription strength problem, and asking for a stronger correction will not fix it. See toric lenses explained.

The parameter range is the real advantage

An excellent lens that is not made in your prescription is not an option at all. The Biofinity family covers unusually wide ranges:

  • Biofinity — spherical, including high plus and minus powers
  • Biofinity Toric — cylinders and axes many competitors do not manufacture
  • Biofinity Multifocal — presbyopia, with centre-near and centre-distance designs combined by dominance
  • Biofinity Toric Multifocal — made to order, covering a combination almost nobody else offers
  • Biofinity Energys — designed for long screen days, with zones intended to reduce focusing effort at close range
  • Biofinity XR — extended ranges for prescriptions outside the normal envelope

If you have been told your prescription is difficult, this family is frequently the answer, and that is a clinical argument rather than a commercial one.

Who it suits

  • Anyone with astigmatism wanting a reliable monthly without surprises
  • Prescriptions other manufacturers do not stock
  • Presbyopia combined with astigmatism, where choices are scarce
  • Anyone who has reacted badly to a coated lens or found comfort falling away by week three

Against the other premium monthlies

  • Biofinity — balance and availability. Usually the sensible starting point.
  • Total30 — a water gradient surface, aimed at lid friction
  • ULTRA — moisture retention at sixteen hours, slightly higher Dk/t

Biofinity tends to be what you start on and stay with unless there is a specific complaint another lens addresses better. See the brand comparison.

What to expect from the fitting

A toric fitting takes longer than a spherical one and often needs a follow-up, because the fitter has to see where the lens settles and whether the axis marks line up after the lens has been on the eye a while. That is normal, not a sign anything is wrong, and it is why a toric fitting fee is higher.
